Rosendale LibraryÕs 50th Anniversary Year
This year, 2008, marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Rosendale Library. Created through the efforts of the Comus Club, Anna Mae Auchmoedy, and the WomanÕs Club of Rosendale the library was incorporated by the New York State Board of Regents as an Association Library on October 24, 1958. Concurrently, Andrew J. Snyder, President of Century Cement Company, acquired and donated the former All SaintsÕ Chapel to house the library.

Built in 1876 in the beautiful Gothic revival style, the library was constructed of local Rosendale cement, cement rock, and brick. A 1975 fire temporarily closed the library until renovations and the addition were completed. In recognition of the unique beauty and historical significance of the building, the library was named to the national and state registers of National Historic Places on August 11, 1986.
The Rosendale Library became a member of the Mid-Hudson Library System in 1959, joining what has become a vibrant consortium of 70 libraries which provide access and sharing of library materials and databases to all.
Over the past 50 years, through many library fairs, fundraising events, grants, and since 1987 Special District formation, the community has supported and recognized the importance and value of our library. As we mark this important anniversary year, the Library Board, Staff, and Friends of the Rosendale Library invite you to be a part of the celebration. Many special events, including an October Birthday Party are being planned. Look for information in this and the next newsletter and join the fun!

50th  Anniversary Events

In addition to the Friendship Quilt many events are being planned over the next eleven months to celebrate Rosendale LibraryÕs 50th Anniversary year. This special yearÕs events begin with the springÕs ÒCelebration of the ArtsÓ series and an anniversary journal program book is being developed for distribution.

Following in the tradition of her parents, when Anita Williams Peck, the third generation of her family to operate Williams Lake, looked for a fitting way to celebrate the recent sale of the resort she thought of her parentsÕ commitment to the betterment of the Rosendale community.   Williams Lake celebrated the ÒEnd of an EraÓ on June 10th with a cocktail party attended by more than 130 people.  Many of the celebrants were previous employees and guests of Williams Lake who shared touching and funny stories of working and growing up in the supportive community that the Williams family created for both their guests and employees.  Anita Peck solicited donations from the party goers and added her own very generous donation to contribute $4,100 to the library.   She chose the Rosendale Library to be the recipient of this donation as a truly fitting honor to the memory of her parents and their commitment and dedication to the Library.

A 50th anniversary celebratory canvas tote bag with the imprint of the library will be available for purchase at the library.

Two major events are planned for the fall.  On Saturday, September 13, 2008 everyone in the community is invited to the libraryÕs birthday party. This family event is free and sure to be a lot of fun. Put it on your calendar now!

A special Library Birthday Buffet Lunch is scheduled for October 19th at the Postage Inn, Rt.32, Tillson. Seating limited to 80 people. Look for additional details about these events in the fall newsletter. At the luncheon, Steve Huben will discuss his book ÒThe VillagersÓ: memories of growing up in Rosendale in the 1930s.  Mr.Huben will be donating 100 copies to be sold  for the benefit of the library.

On May 16th, an author reading is scheduled for the Rosendale Cafe
The library has grown and changed to meet the community needs over the last 50 years.  From the first Library Fair to today, we are fortunate to have had the support and enthusiasm of many, many people.  Join in these celebratory events as we look both back and forward to the next 50 years!

Friend of the Library

Mary Alice Schatzel

Over the last 50 years, the Rosendale Library has been blessed with many dedicated volunteers.  Without their willingness to share their time and talents, the library would not have been able to offer so much to our community.  Among the most dedicated is the libraryÕs longest continuous volunteer, Mary Alice Schatzel.

Twenty-three years ago Mary responded to a request published in St. PeterÕs Sunday bulletin for assistance in placing books on the then new bookshelves in the center of the library.  Over the years Mary has helped the staff with everything from working the front desk to her current responsibilities of processing new books and A-V materials in preparation for them to be linked to the computerized multi-library system.  She still spends much time checking the shelf order of books, especially in the childrenÕs area.  As Mary says, she does Òanything, whatever needs to be done.Ó

Anyone coming to the library on Thursdays from 11am to 5pm is familiar with MaryÕs friendly smile.  She is now seeing the children of the children who were early patrons of the library!  Mary has been a Tillson resident for 48 years.  She and her late husband John raised three children and now have nine grandchildren.  Mary really appreciated the library computers while her son John was in Iraq in 2005-06.  With the staffÕs help she was able to use email to stay in touch and share pictures with John.  Mary encourages others in our community without home access to use the library internet to keep in touch with family and friends.

Mary has seen many changes, new technologies, and much growth in the use of the library over her 23 years of volunteering.  She sees a Òdesperate need for spaceÓ and hopes to see eventual community support for a capital building project.   In the meantime she looks forward to continuing to volunteer at the library.  Mary, as is true for all the many volunteers over the past 50 years, is a great Òfriend of the library.Ó

Friends of Rosendale Library Fiftieth Anniversary Friendship Quilt

As part of the celebration of our 50th Anniversary members of the Friends of Rosendale Library are working on a Friendship Quilt.   Friendship Quilts were very popular in the mid-1800s.  Made for their sentimental value, these quilts were often going-away gifts of remembrance for family members, friends or ministers who were leaving the area, often on their way out West.  Friendship Quilts were also sometimes used to raise money for a local church or community organization.  For a small donation (5 or 10 cents in those early days!), a person could have his or her name inscribed on a square.  When the quilt was completed, it was usually auctioned or raffled off to raise additional money.
We would like our Rosendale Library Friendship Quilt to record the names of as many of our patrons and other library supporters as possible, especially the names of people who were members fifty years ago.  In keeping with the spirit of the Friendship Quilt tradition, we are asking for small, voluntary contributions.  (Suggested donation to sign a square is $5 for adults, $1 for children, but any contribution is welcome; it is the community spirit that is important here!) Squares will be available for signing at the library and at our 50th Anniversary events.

The 50th Anniversary Friendship Quilt will not be sold or raffled, but kept and displayed in the library as a remembrance of our anniversary.   As the quilt will become a part of the libraryÕs history, cards will be
available on which signers can write something about themselves so that future generations will know a bit about each participant.  The Friends of Rosendale Library hope you and your children use this extraordinary opportunity to become a part of library history by signing a quilt square.
If you have any questions, feel free to call Linda at the library, Mondays through Thursdays.

From the Desk of:
Robert Sena, President, Library Board of Trustees

Much has happened since my last report, including the passage of the 2008 Library budget in September. This was an important event because of the margin with which it passed. The total number of votes cast was 224, with 201 in favor and only 23 against. We were pleased to see such overwhelming support for the Library. This victory margin was due in large part to a major get-out-the-vote effort by the Friends of the Library.

The plans to replace the 131 year old slate roof, as mentioned in the last newsletter, are moving along. We applied for a grant from the State through Mid-Hudson Library System in August. The System approved a $45,000 amount and passed it on to the State for final action. This grant will cover only a portion of the roof replacement and the Board is planning other ways to raise funds. The Board also plans to use a substantial amount of the library assets (savings, interest income, etc.) to help fund the project. At present the plan is to begin work on the roof by early summer.

The Library is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2008 and a number of activities and events are planned. Our plan is to have the new roof in place before the fall. The Friends of the LibraryÕs calendar of events for the coming year will allow all segments of the community to find something in which to participate. The coming year should be an exciting one, and the Board should have a number of things to report in the next newsletter.

Library Lights Up

On Saturday, December 8th , the library, as part of the RosendaleÕs Frozendale festival, was all aglow in bright lights.  Thanks to the generosity of Rosendale Hardware in providing the many decorative lights the library was a joyful and welcoming sight to all.

In the afternoon holiday stories were read by storyteller Ann VanDamm.  Frozendale concluded at 5p.m. with the ÒCelebration of LightsÓ ceremony at the library with High Meadow Lower Grades Chorus singing and cookies provided by the Woodcrest Bruderhoff.

School, extracurricular activities, iPods, the Internet, and electronic games are all a part of young adultsÕ lives.  Equally important to students in grades 9 and up are books!   Among the new choices at the library for this age group are:

Diamonds in the Shadow, by Caroline B. Cooney
The last thing Jared wants is a family of refugees living in his house, but his do-gooder mother has made up her mind to host a family from Africa.  When the family arrives, they are not what anyone expects.  Jared senses something suspicious.  He begins to piece things togetherÉwithout realizing that a terrible danger looms over both families.

Love, Stargirl, by Jerry Spinelli
This sequel to the hugely popular Stargirl novel looks at interpersonal relationships, friendship, grief and new beginnings from the perspective of fifteen-year-old Stargirl, aka Susan Julia Caraway.  Having recently moved from Arizona to Pennsylvania, Stargirl finds herself alternately lonely, confused, angry, and lost.  Slowly she begins to look past her own sorrow and rediscover her ÒStargirlÓ self.

CassandraÕs Sister, by Veronica Bennett
This work of historical fiction imagines novelist Jane AustenÕs emotional life in her years as a young, eligible, but poor teenager at the end of the eighteenth and early years of the nineteenth century and how her experiences might have been expressed in her fiction.  The author explores the close relationship Jane had with her only sister, confidante and foil, who also, of course, influenced her early books in the characters of Elinor Dashwood and Jane Bennett.

Enjoy these or any of the many books popular with young adults available at the Rosendale Library.

National Library Week

Join us in celebrating National Library Week 2008 from April 13th to the 19th. This yearÕs theme is "Join the circle of knowledge @ your library.  First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries across the country each April. It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation's libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support.

Celebration of the Arts Workshop/Lecture Series:

As part of the libraryÕs 50th Anniversary Celebration, the Friends of the Rosendale Library will host a series of six poetry lecture/writing workshops, photogram workshops, and hands-on bookmaking workshops. As indicated below, a wide variety of activities are being offered with something appropriate for all ages.   This project is made possible in part through a grant from the Dutchess County Arts Council, administrator of public funds through NYSCAÕs Decentralization Program.  The series will culminate in an exhibition of the finished works at the Rosendale Library.
Dr. Florence Staats, Friends of the Rosendale Library Vice-President, applied in September for a funding grant from the Dutchess County Arts Council (DCAC) to support these programs. $800 in funding has been provided by the DCA. The balance of costs for this series will be provided by the Friends, the Floating Foundation for Photography, and workshop fees.
The Dutchess County Arts Council was established in 1964 as a private, nonprofit arts service organization to promote and coordinate cultural activity and development in our region. Support of the ÒCelebration of ArtsÓ series by the DCAC is recognition of the value of these workshops to the Rosendale community.
Participation in the ÒCelebration of the ArtsÓ is a wonderful way to be a part of the libraryÕs 50th anniversary.  For registration and further fee information contact Sue Horowitz at (845) 658-9013.

Rosendale Library Web Site

Whether you are new to the area or a long time resident, there are new links to good information available through http://www.rosendalelibrary.org/.   The website connects users to the Ulster County Library Association (UCLA) ÒInfoportalÓ databases provided free to Ulster County residents through the gracious support of county taxpayers and the legislature. The libraries agreed to put their funds together to provide new e-books and databases.  Free from your home computer, or the libraryÕs computers, you now have access to database searches of the New York Times, Consumer Reports, and Fiction Connection.  If you liked a book, Fiction Connection lets you find other books that you will most likely also enjoy.

You can download over 1000 audios to your computer that can then be loaded into your MP3 player.  Want to learn another language? Rosetta Stone On-Line language lessons are available.

One of the most popular new databases is Heritage Quest.  Initiated in August, Heritage Quest allows users to search their family history.  If you have an interest in genealogy, this program is for you.

Rosendale Food Pantry
The next time you visit the library you can help your neighbors in need by donating a non-perishable food or personal care item to the Rosendale Food Pantry.  The library maintains a donation box located near the childrenÕs section.  If you can, please help.

Scholarship & Financial Aid

The Friends of the Rosendale Library will again fund a college scholarship for a local high school senior.  Information and application forms will be available at the library this spring.

Library Spring Planting & Clean-Up-Day
The annual library spring clean-up and planting day will be held in May.  While the specific Saturday for the spruce-up/planting of the grounds and cleaning of the bookshelves is yet to be scheduled, we hope you will plan to join your neighbors in helping to prepare the library for its birthday celebration.  Notice of the clean-up day schedule will be posted at the library.
